livejournal action role procrastinating
Oct. 4th, 2004 12:43 amIt appears that the only light core I can find around here is a PVC with 1" inner diameter, and the only foam I can order of suitable thickness comes in 7/8" ID and 9/8" ID, and nothing in between. I made a couple of swords with the 1" PVC and the 7/8" ID foam, by mercilessly shoving the foam down the pipe or cutting the foam and rebinding it with strapping tape. Both techniques made decent weapons that appear to be safe, but I expect them to break down quickly from the internal pressure on the foam. Also, despite having a light core, they swing like bricks; only slightly better than SCH40 pipe.
Thus, I'm switching to fiberglass core, since I can hopefully use 1/2" ID foam on a .505" fiberglass core. The only problem with fiberglass as far as I can tell is that cutting it requires some safety precautions (since it lets off tiny glass fibers which irritate eyes and lungs and such). I guess I'm willing to bite the bullet on that one. Besides, it's a lot easier to order fiberglass online than walk a mile out to Home Depot and haul a mile back with ten-foot pipe lengths every time I need more core.
dracai, do you have any advice on fiberglass? I know you mentioned using graphite, but I can't find anything larger than .31" diameter, so I sort of skipped over it.
And holy crap, writing a LARP rule system is addictive. I've lost count of the number of hours I've sunk into writing these rules over the past two weeks. If I'm not careful, it will start impacting my school work.
