I have a strong desire to begin creating music of the elecronic variety (perhaps in the album-a-day mold of artistry). On a budget of $epsilon, are there tools available to accomplish this task easily/well? (I would prefer not to artificially reduce the cost of a commercial package to $epsilon unless there are no other options).

I remember hearing about this program called "Fruity Loops." Further vague examination debunks my memory that it is Mac only. A basic version of it can be had for approximately $50, and I have read somewhere, I think particularly ocremix, that it isn't bad. In fact, I suspect that ocremix might be a good place to go to learn about things of this nature.

Aside from that, you could look at Acid, but IIRC that is very expensive, like a few hundred for the basic set, and $50 or so per music pack.

I am pretty sure that everyonce in a while comp stores like comp usa do special promos on acid for cheap ~$25. That still doesn't offset the cost of extra music packs. I'll check and see if I have an extra copy back home. :)

Nyquist is the program that Roger Dannenberg created for computer music synthesis and that we used in his Introduction to Computer Music class last fall.

It's a lisp-based music language interpreter. Check it out.

Pro Tools is the famous one, but it's actually constructed entirely from money. It's fun to play with though, and if your campus has a media lab, you might have access to a copy.

Another one made entirely from money (or, ahem out of a mixture of letters upper and lowercase and numbers, and also the suffix "-0rz!1", and found in disreputable alleyways of Th' Great Interweb) that seems pretty fun to play with is Cubase.
