Had a long and regenerative conversation with jbeckens. I intentionally undertook to break all the Rules about what sorts of problems and questions I'm supposed to internalize or suppress so that people aren't bothered by them. That was very helpful, and in fact constituted the better part of the kind of Help that I've needed.
I am still very much intrigued by the idea of creating my own religion. Not even as a joke; this would be a serious exercise in synthesis, and would help me to underscore to myself the principles by which I intend to live my life. And you, dear reader, might even find it marginally interesting as well.

Date: 2003-10-08 10:49 am (UTC)i think i was almost your age when i realized that the religion i had always thought myself a member of wasn't entirely well-suited; in my case i agreed with some of the axioms, but didn't agree with the conclusions, so i ended up doing a des cartesian exercise of tearing down everything i knew, and then rebuilding it based on things i felt comfortable with. at that point in time three rather influential works for me were the matrix, an introductory book on buddhism, greg egan's permutation city, and brian greene's the elegant universe.
regardless of what you do, there will be portions that some people will call arbitrary. but it doesn't matter, because it's your religion, and i think after you've gone and thought about it you'll probably feel more confident in your own beliefs.
one thing i'm curious about; do you think you'll be using preexisting work as a jumping off point? or do you think you'll try to synthesize everything yourself?
i, for one, am eager to see what you've decided on.
