I have new footwear. These managed to satisfy all of my criteria: no leather, waterproof, hot-pavement-proof, indestructible, comfortable, and attractive. They are machine washable (the owner's manual even recommends regular machine washing), a characteristic of footwear to which I am not at all accustomed. The foot webbing is one continuous strap that runs through the footbed; learning how to tighten and loosen it was an interesting exercise in topology.
I got them at InStep, which I would definitely recommend if you're looking for sandals in Austin.
